In March we were introduced to Sandra Bruce of Grass Valley, Calif., speaking on “Material Matrix.” Her slide show of the progression of her career from graphic artist to quilter to longarm quilter, showed the growth of her talent outside of the constraints of graphic art. She spoke of her inspiration, Chuck Close, whose work has inspired her own portrait quilts, and who she recently gifted with a portrait of himself. She mentioned that she keeps herself involved with the quilting community by working with several groups, including MAQ, Mountain Art Quilters, which is a group of ladies from Grass Valley and Nevada City. Her diversified business interests include art quilting, longarm quilting and polymer clay work.
